Summary

ok id just describe this book and basically everyone in it as pretentious and selfish。 maybe that was the “message” but I think it was done in such an annoying way that it was lost。 didn’t like the book。 the writing itself though was fine。 also, use quotation marks, you’re not that special

Allie

Better than normal people I think but also very similar which I didn’t really enjoy。 I felt similar to frances sometimes。 I like how she sprinkles in social commentary

Hated “Normal People”, but I really enjoyed this read。

I loved the writing and passing in this book 。 I love the way the characters spoke to one another 。 The only thing was the characters themselves。 I felt like I didn’t particularly find them likeable 。 But it was oddly refreshing and interesting looking into the lives of people I didn’t particularly like that much 。 But the overall book was pretty good just didn’t enjoy the personalties of people which is fine I still enjoyed reading about them and they’re lives 。

me lo leí por segunda vez para un club de lectura y nada, me lo leería ochenta veces más。 5 estrellas, 10, 15。

When I first started reading this book, I was so impressed w its cleverness and thought ‘wow, for sure a 5-star book。’ But from there it just gradually got worse and worse。 The main character was deeply problematic, mostly for herself, and would clearly benefit from some therapy and some work on her thinking patterns, like Jesus Christ。 There was absolutely NO character development in any of the characters, especially the main character (she actually instead devolves aggressively), which was sup When I first started reading this book, I was so impressed w its cleverness and thought ‘wow, for sure a 5-star book。’ But from there it just gradually got worse and worse。 The main character was deeply problematic, mostly for herself, and would clearly benefit from some therapy and some work on her thinking patterns, like Jesus Christ。 There was absolutely NO character development in any of the characters, especially the main character (she actually instead devolves aggressively), which was super frustrating in a book that was exclusively about interpersonal relationships。 I also felt ambiguous about the endless references to liberal arts college type themes and convo topics, like anarchy and communism and gender theory and intellectualized current events like the Middle East。 Like it’s so classic that it functions almost best as a time capsule for this type of thinking, but it’s offhandedly / subtly romanticized in a way that becomes a little tired after a while。 All in all, I feel like I don’t understand the point or the message of this book, although there’s SOOO much dialogue discussing profound things, but I guess that’s perhaps the point (it certainly kept me turning pages, and it probably an accurate internal dialogue of a liberal arts college student w mental health struggles) 。。。more

Sally Rooney's books always seem to leave me depressed, but in the best possible way。 Rooney articulates my thoughts so well I feel like i've never had an original thought or feeling。 I relate too well to Frances。 Highly recommend to any overthinkers。 Sally Rooney's books always seem to leave me depressed, but in the best possible way。 Rooney articulates my thoughts so well I feel like i've never had an original thought or feeling。 I relate too well to Frances。 Highly recommend to any overthinkers。 。。。more

I’m not sure if this will book will hold up its 5 star ranking on a reread, but upon finishing it (more like consuming it) I am absolutely floored。 Rooney is one of the best fiction writers in today’s generation and this is another great example of that。 Better than ‘Normal People’ I think (idk have to reread that)。 I finished this book in less than a day because how entranced I was by these characters and Rooneys DEEP storytelling… everyone must read

hard for the first 50 pages but wow。 unputdownable。 and it’s weird to say that i thought about it every second i wasn’t reading it。

A gripping and easy to read romance story。 Characters and both easy to love and hate。 Not the biggest fan of Sally Rooneys writing style - more so when it comes to speech within the book。 Personally - wasn’t a fan of the ending。

Likte denne så godt!!! Men gir den 4 fordi den går litt sakte, men samtidig liker jeg det HAHH

i found this hard bc I really didn’t like any of the characters lol and did not live up to normal people

So Irish。 So literary。 I finally realized that I really like Sally Rooney’s writing。 At times it is dense and esoteric, but it is grounded in this very simple Hemingwayesque narrative。 Really such a fresh and distinct style。 She was born in 1991。 1991! What a great writer and so young!

I can only guess what "Beautiful World, Where Are You" is like but would not be terribly suprised if (one of) the main character(s) is a somewhat withdrawn, clearly brilliant girl in her early twenties, studying in Dublin, going to a vacation house of an unknown friend and getting published for the first time。I finished it but can't say I got much more out of it after having already read Normal People。Dialogue's/internal chatter-format remains a pleasant treat though。 I can only guess what "Beautiful World, Where Are You" is like but would not be terribly suprised if (one of) the main character(s) is a somewhat withdrawn, clearly brilliant girl in her early twenties, studying in Dublin, going to a vacation house of an unknown friend and getting published for the first time。I finished it but can't say I got much more out of it after having already read Normal People。Dialogue's/internal chatter-format remains a pleasant treat though。 。。。more

This genuinely took me 4 months to read bc i stopped 3 days after i started and put it off until 2 days ago。 The way this was written made everything just seem unimportant and also like nothing was happening at all。 To be honest it really just felt like 300 pages of trying to get us to feel bad for frances when she was just really whiny and annoying for most of it。 Not for me🤭THE NO QUOTATION MARKS MADE ME WANT TO RIP MY HAIR OUT

One of the best character studies I've read in a long time。 Rooney is a master in depicting realistic characters and situations that are relatable。 Characters are not always likable, but they are recognizable as human。 One of the best character studies I've read in a long time。 Rooney is a master in depicting realistic characters and situations that are relatable。 Characters are not always likable, but they are recognizable as human。 。。。more

Rooney's characters are painful, awkward, brilliant, charming, complicated, and although I appreciate her ability to capture the essence of 20-somethings, their inner lives and relationships, I also found both this book and Normal People vaguely depressing。 I think just not what I wanted read at this moment。 Rooney's characters are painful, awkward, brilliant, charming, complicated, and although I appreciate her ability to capture the essence of 20-somethings, their inner lives and relationships, I also found both this book and Normal People vaguely depressing。 I think just not what I wanted read at this moment。 。。。more

I need to process a lot of things, but that ending will replay in my head because I need to now what happens next。 That romance was very complicated, draining and wrong but I ate it up so bad I just honestly ended up loving reading it。 I wanted to highlight a lot of the phrases that just felt very personal to me, that’s the magic of Rooney and her characters, I can relate to them, root for them while also being conflicted about them and their decisions。 But that’s life and is captured beautifull I need to process a lot of things, but that ending will replay in my head because I need to now what happens next。 That romance was very complicated, draining and wrong but I ate it up so bad I just honestly ended up loving reading it。 I wanted to highlight a lot of the phrases that just felt very personal to me, that’s the magic of Rooney and her characters, I can relate to them, root for them while also being conflicted about them and their decisions。 But that’s life and is captured beautifully in conversations with friends。 My FEEELINGS。Frances you can be very unlikable but I loved you tbh。 。。。more
